The flag of New Caledonia was adopted on September 17, 2010. The flag is a tricolor consisting of three horizontal bands of blue, green, and red. The blue band represents the ocean surrounding the archipelago, the green band represents the vegetation on the islands, and the red band represents the people living on the islands and their fight for independence.
In the center of the flag is a symbol known as the "Kanak flag" which is made up of a yellow disc with a black flèche faitière (roof arrow) pointing towards the upper right corner. This symbol represents the independence movement and the traditional culture of the Kanak people of New Caledonia.
The New Caledonia flag replaced the previous flag, which was the French tricolor with a Kanak emblem in the center. The new flag is part of the Noumea Accord, an agreement signed between France and the indigenous Kanak people in 1998 that granted autonomy to the territory and set a timeline for possible independence referendums.
